Lab :: Unlocking the Power of User Story Mapping

  • “simple maps to visualize the stories you tell about your products”

User story mapping is powerful visual exercise that teams use to create the most delightful user experience, prioritize work, and improve their understanding of customers. By building a dynamic outline of a representative user's interactions with the product, teams can evaluate which steps provide the most benefit for the user and prioritize what should be built next.

User story mapping, provides an alternative to building a flat list of backlog items or working from lengthy requirements documents for Agile organizations.

  • In this practical and interactive 5-hour online lab will guide you through the process to model a visual map for a real problem to solve.

Following you can find a few of the activities we will cover

    Setting the frame

    • Before we start mapping, we’ll frame our challenge around a common goal and vision. We’ll create clarity around the problem we are trying to solve, the target audience we are solving it for and the potential benefits.

    Map the big picture

    • With a clear goal we’ll continue with the creation of our product “backbone”. This will cover the entire user journey, from start to finish. At this point, we want to go wide, not deep, see patterns, group activities

    Break large activities

    • With a good enough defined end to end journey, we’ll start to go a step deeper and fill the body of our map. We’ll look for any missing tasks or steps, discuss and see the map from different perspectives

    Slicing the map

    • With the overall view of our map available, we’ll then start slicing our map into valuable releases.

Turn the story map into a delivery strategy

    • We’ll estimate, prioritise and connect our map with our and delivery strategy

By the end of our lab you’ll have a good understanding how a story map exercise could help your teams to

    • Plan better, see the big picture, identify dependencies and risks

    • Deliver more value sooner

    • Improve collaboration

    • See your product/services through your users’ perspective

and, most importantly, how you can start using the practice with confidence! 💪
